TEST

THE BUTLER BENCHMARKING MAIN TEST

The Butler Benchmarking Main Test is the foundation of the platform — a rigorous, 100-question assessment built on four core categories, each comprising 25 questions. Together, they measure the absolute baseline competencies that every hotel butler must possess to perform at the highest level.

These four categories are deliberately universal. Whether your butler team operates in Tokyo, Dubai, London or New York — regardless of brand, property type or service offering — these are the skills that define professional excellence in luxury butler service.

THE FOUR CATEGORIES

01

Butler Skills

At the heart of exceptional butler service lies a mastery of the fundamentals. This category assesses each butler’s command of the core knowledge and practical skills their role demands — from arrival and departure procedures to the preparation and delivery of in-room amenities. We evaluate their understanding of what genuine personalization means in practice: anticipatory care, discreet problem-solving, the confident management of multiple concurrent guest requests, and the seamless coordination of external services. This is where great butler service begins.

02

Food & Beverage Service

The luxury dining experience is inseparable from the butler’s role. This category assesses proficiency in fine dining etiquette and service protocols — proper table settings, refined serving technique, and a working knowledge of international cuisines and dietary requirements. It also evaluates beverage expertise, from wine pairing and Champagne service to cocktail preparation and a broad awareness of international drinks culture. A butler who commands the table commands the room.

03

Communication & Etiquette

A butler’s words, bearing, and cultural awareness are as much a part of the service as any technical skill. This category evaluates command of both verbal and non-verbal communication, the ability to navigate complex or sensitive guest requests with discretion and professionalism, and an awareness of the international cultural nuances that shape guest expectations worldwide. It assesses commitment to anticipatory service and refined conduct — the standards that distinguish a truly exceptional butler from a merely capable one.

04

Emotional Engagement

Soft skills make the butler. Technical knowledge is essential — but it is emotional intelligence that transforms competent service into memorable hospitality. This category assesses each butler’s ability to demonstrate genuine empathy, adaptability, and presence across a wide range of guest interactions. We evaluate active listening, proactive anticipation of needs, discreet problem-solving and the capacity to remain composed under pressure. Above all, we assess a butler’s ability to foster a personalized, seamless luxury experience through the quality of their interpersonal conduct — the quality no checklist can fully capture, but that every guest feels.

RESULTS THAT DRIVE DECISIONS

Once your team has completed the assessment, results are delivered directly to your secure online dashboard — accessible to hotel leadership at any time, from anywhere in the world.

The platform presents a complete picture of performance at every level. Individual butler scores identify precisely where each team member excels and where targeted development is needed. Team and department aggregate scores give management a clear view of collective capability. And crucially, all results are measured against global industry benchmark data — allowing you to see not just where your team stands within your property, but how they compare against butler departments around the world.

This is not reporting for its own sake. It is the intelligence that empowers hoteliers to make informed decisions, allocate training resources where they will have the greatest impact, and build a butler department that sets the standard rather than chasing it.

THE ORIGIN OF THE BUTLER STANDARD

Everywhere I travelled, the question was the same. A hotel General Manager would lean in and ask, ‘So how do my butlers compare to others around the world?’ And every time, my answer was just two words: ‘It depends.’ The quizzical look that followed told me they wanted more. What they truly wanted was to know where they stood – in their region, and across the world. No one had ever been able to tell them.

Here is the problem. You can compare bed linens by thread count. You can judge a Caesar salad against Cardini’s original recipe, or a full-bodied red Bordeaux by its silky tannins and layered notes of blackcurrant, plum, and cedar. These things have standards – precise, agreed upon, and easy to measure.

But how do you compare the butler caring for a young family at a Caribbean beach resort with the one attending retired travellers circling the globe by sea, or the one anticipating the needs of an executive launching a new product in Shanghai? Each is exceptional. Each is entirely different.

But none of them could answer the question underneath it all: compared to what standard? Because there wasn’t one. Nowhere in the world did a common standard for butlers exist.

That was my turning point. In 2019, somewhere over the Atlantic on flight AC57 from Dubai to Toronto, I decided I had to crack the mystery. If butlers serve in such wildly different worlds, there had to be a common thread connecting them all. I simply had to find it.

And I did. Beneath every specialty, every setting, and every style of service lies a core set of skills that every butler – anywhere in the world – must master. This is the common global standard: the foundation on which every great butler is built.

But a single standard alone could never capture the full picture. A butler serving champagne and caviar in a Monaco penthouse is judged on different details than one caring for a young family at Disneyland. So, alongside the global standard, each hotel needed the ability to select specialty topics that reflect its own service offering – the skills that matter most to its brand, its guests, and its teams.

The result is a dual assessment. Every butler is measured against the common global standard that applies the world over, and against the specialty topics each hotel chooses as relevant to its own teams. One framework that finally makes butlers comparable everywhere – with the flexibility for every property to remain unmistakably its own.

And this is what changes everything. Once a butler is assessed, the score is no longer just a number – it is a position. For the first time, a hotel can see precisely how its butlers measure against others in its region and across the world. The question every General Manager once asked me – ‘How do my butlers compare?’ – finally has a true answer. That is what a global standard makes possible: not merely a measure of skill, but a means of comparison that has never existed until now.

That is the Butler Standard. It did not exist before. So, I built it.

THE SPECIALTY CATEGORY TESTS

The Butler Benchmarking platform recognises that no two luxury hotels are identical. Brand identity, geographic location, guest demographics, and signature service offerings vary enormously across the industry. The Specialty Category Tests are designed to reflect that reality.

These optional assessments allow hotels to select only the categories relevant to their property and service offering — ensuring that results are meaningful, fair, and directly applicable to the standards your guests actually experience. A butler team in a Highland whisky lodge operates in a different world from one serving royalty in the Middle East. Both deserve an assessment built around its specific excellence.

Choose the categories that define your brand. Benchmark what matters to you.

FIND THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOUR PROPERTY

Every great butler department is built on knowledge that is both deep and specific. Select the Specialty Categories that reflect your brand, your guests, and your standards — and let Butler Benchmarking give you the data to take your team further.

1. Afternoon Tea

Few rituals in luxury hospitality carry the weight of tradition that afternoon tea does. This assessment evaluates a butler’s knowledge of the history and etiquette of afternoon tea service, the selection and preparation of teas, the curation of accompaniments, and the art of presentation. We assess the butler’s ability to orchestrate an afternoon tea experience that is unhurried, elegant, and memorable — where every detail, from tea selection to table setting, reflects the highest standards of refinement.

2. Caviar

For many luxury properties, caviar service is a defining moment of the guest experience. This assessment covers the selection, presentation, and service of caviar — including an understanding of the different varieties, their origins, and the nuances of flavour and texture that distinguish them. We evaluate the butler’s ability to pair caviar with appropriate accompaniments and beverages, as well as the practical skills of proper storage, handling, and serving technique. The standard throughout is uncompromising: quality, precision, and an instinct for the luxurious.

3. Champagne & Sparkling Wines

Champagne is synonymous with celebration, and a butler who truly understands it elevates every occasion it graces. This assessment evaluates proficiency in the selection, service, and pairing of Champagne and sparkling wines — encompassing knowledge of producing regions, production methods, and the distinctive character of different styles. We assess practical skills including proper storage, serving technique, and the ability to guide guests to the right choice for every moment and preference.

4. Cheese

The world’s great cheeses represent centuries of craft, culture, and terroir — and a butler who can speak to them fluently adds genuine depth to any dining experience. This assessment evaluates expertise in the selection, presentation, and service of international cheeses, including knowledge of types, origins, and production methods. We assess the ability to identify and articulate the distinctive flavours and textures of each cheese, pair them with appropriate accompaniments and beverages, and apply the correct techniques for storage, cutting, and service.

5. Chocolate

At the highest levels of luxury hospitality, even chocolate becomes an experience. This assessment evaluates a butler’s knowledge of fine chocolate — its origins, varieties, and production methods — as well as the ability to identify and appreciate the subtle distinctions among them. We assess practical skills in storage, beverage pairing, and the art of presentation, ensuring that the butler can transform a simple offering into a moment of genuine indulgence.

6. Cigars

Cigar service demands knowledge, precision, and an ability to read the guest. This comprehensive assessment evaluates a butler’s proficiency across the full breadth of cigar service — from an understanding of different types, origins, and characteristics, to the correct techniques for storage, cutting, lighting, and presenting. We assess the butler’s ability to make considered, confident recommendations based on the guest’s preferences and the occasion, delivering a premium experience worthy of the most discerning  clientele.

7. Cognac

Cognac occupies a singular place in the world of fine spirits — and serving it well is an art. This assessment evaluates a butler’s knowledge of cognac regions, production methods, and the ageing processes that define each style, as well as the ability to select, present, and pair cognac with the elegance the spirit demands. Practical skills including proper storage, decanting, and serving technique are assessed throughout, with the benchmark set at the standard expected by the world’s most sophisticated guests.

8. Scotch & Whisky

Scotch and whisky represent a world of nuance that the finest butlers navigate with confidence. This assessment evaluates proficiency in selection, service, and pairing — encompassing a thorough understanding of producing regions, production methods, and the distinctive character of different styles. We assess the practical skills of storage and service, as well as the ability to guide guests to specific varieties that match their palate and the occasion. The result: a tasting experience that is superior in every respect.

9. Wines

Wine knowledge is foundational to the luxury dining experience, and this assessment sets the standard. We evaluate expertise across wine selection, service, and pairing — including knowledge of producing regions, grape varieties, and production methods, as well as the ability to identify and articulate the characteristics of a wide range of wines. The assessment covers the butler’s capability to recommend pairings for different dishes and occasions, and the practical skills of storage, decanting, and the art of presenting and serving wine to guests. For high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clientele, this is not optional knowledge. It is expected.

A NOTE ON EXPANDING THE PLATFORM

The Butler Benchmarking platform is continuously developing. We are actively working to expand the Specialty Category suite to include customer service scenario assessments — practical, situational evaluations that test a butler’s judgement, emotional intelligence, and instinct in the moments that matter most. If you have specific assessment needs not currently represented in our category list, we invite you to speak with our team.

HUMAN RESOURCES HIRING TESTS

Hire With Certainty. Not Instinct.

Every experienced Human Resources (HR) professional knows the moment. The interviews are complete. The references have been checked. The candidates on your shortlist are accomplished, well-presented, and credible. And yet the question remains: beyond what they have told you, what do they actually know?

For luxury hotel butler recruitment, that question is not a formality. It is the difference between a hire that elevates your department and one that quietly undermines it.

Butler Benchmarking answers that question — with data.

THE CHALLENGE OF KNOWLEDGE-BASED HIRING

Evaluating a candidate’s professional presentation, cultural fit, and interpersonal qualities is a skill every strong HR team possesses. But assessing the depth and accuracy of a butler candidate’s subject knowledge — their genuine command of the skills, protocols, and expertise your guests will depend on — is a different challenge entirely.

It is also, consistently, the most difficult step in the final stages of the recruitment process. When two strong candidates are separated by instinct rather than evidence, the risk of the wrong decision rises significantly.

Butler Benchmarking eliminates that risk.

KNOWLEDGE-BASED HIRING TESTS

Our Hiring Tests are purpose-built assessments designed by subject matter experts with deep experience in luxury butler service. They give HR decision-makers access to rigorous, knowledge-based evaluations that measure what a candidate truly knows — not simply what they are able to present in an interview setting.

Hiring Tests are fully integrated into your Butler Benchmarking dashboard. You determine at which stage of your recruitment cycle the assessment is administered. The candidate completes their test, and a detailed report is generated automatically — ready for your team to review, compare, and act on.

The result is a hiring process that is faster, fairer, and grounded in objective data rather than subjective impression.

WHAT THE REPORTS DELIVER

Each Hiring Test report gives your team a clear, evidence-based picture of where each candidate stands. The data allows you to:

  • Evaluate the depth and accuracy of each candidate’s knowledge base against the standards your property demands
  • Compare candidates on the same objective criteria, regardless of how they performed in interview
  • Move the strongest candidates from shortlist to offer with confidence — supported by hard data, not gut feeling
  • Build a consistent, defensible hiring standard across your HR team and across multiple properties

YOU HAVE THE DATA – NOW WHAT?

Turning your Butler Benchmarking report into a competitive advantage

Once you have your data, the critical step is understanding what it means. Interpreting it correctly is what allows you to make solid, informed business decisions – and that, in turn, is what gives you a competitive advantage.

Begin with your butler scores. Read the report in full, then study your results by category and topic. This is where the real value lies: in the depth of the data, and in your new ability to see exactly where your team excels and precisely where it struggles.

Next, set your team’s scores against your local market and the global benchmark. Where do you stand? Do the numbers take you by surprise, or are you broadly where you expected to be?

Either way, do not be afraid of your data. Embrace it.

For the first time, you can evaluate your butler department on real, indisputable data – not on opinion, instinct or how someone happens to feel. That is a powerful position to be in. Here is how to use it.

Stage One – Share the Data

Share the results openly with your team. Do not hide the facts: transparency is what turns a report into momentum.

Stage Two – Hold a Working Session

Bring your team together and use these questions to start the conversation:

  • Do we clearly know what we want from our butler department? Can we articulate it in two simple sentences?
  • What is our service offering today – and what could it become?
  • Who is our direct and indirect competition, and how do we compare with them? Have we secret-shopped their product?
  • Have our butler standards been properly documented, and when were they last reviewed?
  • Can our butlers easily access those standards, or are they sitting in a binder on a shelf, out of reach?
  • What does our annual butler training programme currently look like?
  • What does success look like? Define it clearly.

If you need an outside perspective, bring in external experts to help you define both where your service stands today and where it could go.

Athletes don’t win by training one week in fifty-two for the Olympics. They win by training daily, weekly and monthly – and that is exactly how you need to think if you want to win.

Stage Three – Build the Plan

  • Map it out. Whiteboard your roadmap, commit it to paper and set clear milestones.
  • Discuss your areas of strength and the topics where the team struggles.
  • Determine a training frequency that meets your needs – and consider whether individual coaching has a role to play.
  • Make team members accountable for the deliverables in the plan.
  • Review your current trainer. Are they the right partner, or is it time to consider other options?

Rome wasn’t built in a day. Your butler team needs time to train if it is to reach success.

Where to Begin

When you are ready to turn your data into a plan, we can help you build the roadmap – and the training programme – that takes your butler team to the top. Let us start the conversation.

BRAND STANDARDS TESTS

Every luxury hotel group has brand standards. The question is not whether they exist — it is whether your teams, across every property and every shift, truly understand and deliver them.

The gap between a beautifully written brand standards document and what actually happens on the floor is where guest experience is won or lost. And for most hotel groups, that gap is invisible — until a guest tells you about it.

Butler Benchmarking Brand Standards Testing makes that gap visible. So, you can close it.

HOW IT WORKS

This is not an off-the-shelf product. Every programme is built specifically for your hotel group.

What You Will Know

When your teams have completed the programme, your corporate leadership will have clear, actionable data:

  • Where brand standard knowledge is strong — and where it needs immediate attention
  • How understanding compares across properties — within your hotel group
  • How results shift over time — as training programmes evolve and teams change
  • Where to direct training investment — based on data, not assumption

Results remain exclusively within your hotel group. No data is shared externally. No comparisons are made outside your organisation

OUR PROMISE TO YOU

Brand Standards Testing results are kept completely and permanently separate from your Butler Benchmarking test results. The two are never combined, never compared externally, and never visible to anyone outside your organisation.

The only people who will ever see your Brand Standards results are the people you authorise. That is not a policy. That is our absolute promise — and it is a promise we make without reservation

Your Data. Your People. Your Results. Nobody Else.

Butler Benchmarking was built on the principle that trust is everything in this industry. We have never compromised the confidentiality of a client — and we never will. Your brand standards are among your most sensitive internal assets, and we treat them accordingly. Our reputation depends on it, and so does yours.
